It’s that time of year again! We’re about to jet off on our summer holiday but low and behold panic strikes as it is time to sort out the dreaded holiday wardrobe. While I may have my swimsuit somewhere in the back of the wardrobe, guaranteed the things missing from my holiday clothes list is appropriate holiday footwear, sensible luggage and all the accessories and holiday gizmos that make a holiday wardrobe complete and not an epic disaster and like most women there are others to consider, from what you will take for the kids to your other half’s holiday clothes too.

Luckily I’m a fan of online shopping and the site holiday wardrobe is an absolute lifesaver. From holiday clothes such as dresses and swimsuits – they also have a great range of footwear, clothing for him, travel accessories, suitcases, ruck sacks and much much more. Stocking leading brands from Roxy to Ray-Bans, you can pick up mosquito repellent and the latest Eastpak rucksack all in one hit!

With great pieces at a range of prices there are holiday clothes and accessories to ensure everyone’s holiday wardrobe is bang on trend and also totally appropriate.

But don’t worry it isn’t just pool lazing that is catered for here. Whether you’re off camping or going to do something more adventurous – or even not so sunny, you can still find a range of essentials here. Happy shopping and happy holidaying!

Hermès is proud to announce the arrival of Festival des Métiers in London; an exhibition showcasing 10 different Hermès crafts at London’s Saatchi Gallery, 22 May – 28 May 2013. Working just as they would in the Hermès workshops in France, the craftspeople will be in situ at the exhibition for 7 days making a wide selection of Hermès objects by hand.

This engaging public exhibition provides a fascinating insight into the traditions and values of Hermès in the crafting of fine objects; a presentation that encourages interaction by giving visitors the opportunity to meet and exchange with the Hermès’ artisans and experience first-hand their unique savoir-faire.

Festival des Métiers unlocks the poetic and unique crafts that are the essence of the house of Hermès, as their craftspeople reveal the mastery of their métiers. Visitors will see the famous Hermès silk scarf printed before their eyes and to rhythmic sounds of the artisans’ tools, handbags, saddles, fine-jewellery and other iconic objects from Hermès will be brought to life during the course of the exhibition.

Entry is free.

Abercrombie CEO Mike Jeffries allegedly said that they only wanted “thin and beautiful” customers.

In an interview with Business Insider, Robin Lewis, a retail industry analyst and co-author of The New Rules of Retail, suggested Jeffries “doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing”.

“That’s why we hire good-looking people in our stores,” Jeffries said. “Because good-looking people attract other good-looking people, and we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don’t market to anyone other than that.” He went on: “In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids…Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”

When Abercrombie and Fitch first launched off of Regent Street I have to admit I had no idea who they were. I’m not a jeans and tee kind of girl, in fact i’ve only ever owned two pairs of jeans, a pair from Topshop that I wore to death and then turned into a skirt and a pair from Alexander McQueen, because they were in the sale, they fitted and when I wore them in Milan and it rained the dye ran all over my legs and onto my brand new Lacoste trainers, the ultimate in fashion fail. So for me Abercrombie and Fitch is the essence of no style, style. The clothing generic, seasonless, and the store with a strange smell that literally wafts onto the Regent street and beyond and of course the weird male adonis adorning the doorway – why would you pay to be snapped with a topless boy it seems so incredibly tasteless. It’s funny how much tasteless costs. You must be thinking that I know an awful lot about a store I don’t buy from. Well in the days when I did personal shopping and assisting a personal shopper we had to venture in there a few times for very petite clients and as the CEO has been slated this week for saying they do cater brilliantly for the tiny of frame – and that is no bad thing, if you are really small clothing can be difficult and on that front I can’t fault them.

On my numerous trips into the darkened store – yes that’s right, a store with no lights on – I’m not sure if that is to hide the shockingly high price tags from bewildered parents or because the people that buy in there literally do not care what they wear as long as it has an Abercrombie and Fitch logo. I’ve stood there holding t-shirts up to the spotlights like a lunatic and wondered round the huge store that seams to sell the same product in every room. That hires models to dance like they’re in a night club – yes they don’t have to work just dance – and been told if I wanted assistance I could ask one of the ‘models’. I don’t want help from a model in store, I want to be served by a sales assistant – am I just old? Or has Abercrombie and Fitch really crossed the mark?

The truth is the brand does what they say on the tin and while I don’t agree with the idea that thin = beauty and the very fact they peddle this message so openly is worried but I do commend their honesty – after all lets not fool ourselves there are several high street retailers who evidently think the same thing, except they aren’t ballsy or perhaps stupid enough to stay. Abercrombie and Fitch are true to their values to their core and if that puts people off so be it. At the moment they still let anyone in and pre opening time i’ve seen people queuing round the block but I do see a day when the shop come nightclub introduces a door policy – after all the kids shopping in there don’t match the aspirational imagery that they are peddled.

This sudden outrage again Robin Lewis wont stop children wearing it and it wont stop parents parting with their cash in store, all it does is solidify the need within teenage peer groups to be a part of the A&F lifestyle – perhaps this was all just a clever marketing rouse, after-all it is not the first time the brand has willingly courted controversy. The truth and the bottom line is they simply do not care. They are corporation feeding off youths insecurities and need to fit in and while their message is shallow and exploitive and their clothing, frankly a pile of rags – they at least have the guts to admit to it.

There is only one word I can use to describe how I felt when I read about two current ‘Lads Night Out’ games that up until this week I’d never heard of… SICK. Yep that pretty much sums it up I felt sick. Then I felt disappointed, confused and lastly I moved on to angry, fuming actually would be a better description. For those of you luck enough to have not read about this, you have two options, click off this article, walk away, remain blissful and unaware at yet another horrific consequent of our fat shaming society; or alternatively read on and join me in utter dismay. Fat Girl Rodeo is essentially played by idiotic lads on a night out…

“Grab “fat” woman in a club, and hang on to her yelling “yee-hah”, until they throw you off, or you dance up close to them, “acting nice,” aka pretending to be a normal human being, then whisper that they are “a minger”, and try to hang on for as long as you can. There is apparently a variety of this “game” which involves telling a girl or woman you are going to rape her, and then, yes, you guessed right, hanging on to her for as long as you can.” (Independent)

I’m reading your slightly perplexed expression now, it is not April 1st and this is no joke. Fat discrimination is the last remaining acceptable form of abuse of discrimination of its kind. While we have gone PC crazy over race and religion to bully and abuse someone because of their appearance or physicality is not only acceptable it is seen now apparently as some jovial high jinx prank. Well I don’t know about you but I’m not laughing.

A variation of this game also involves having sex with a fat girl as a means of scoring points or holding onto a girl in a club, whispering you’re going to rape her and seeing how long you can hold on for. Yes again, not funny is it?

But where did these men, sorry I mean boys a. Learn this behaviour and b. think in anyway shape or form it was acceptable?

If a similar game was played based on race, ethnicity or religion, arrests would be made, laws would be quoted and court sessions would be held, but if threats and demeaning behaviour is shown to a woman based on physicality alone, this apparently acceptable. The fact that this story broke just after International Woman’s Day was even more painful. It appears with every tip toe forward, young, idiotic, males are waiting to attempt to slam women back down.

Fat remains the last laugh and the portrayal of plus size women remains a platform for jokes from comedians, script writers and weekly magazines and their evil hoops of horror – it feels that it is little wonder that these boys believe that their torture game is a good laugh and a level playing field. As society have we really taught them any differently? Have we presented enough acceptable varying body shapes or told other women let alone men that there is not one perfect look or size? When as women we put each other down so much that the learnt behaviour is fat is bad it’s ok to take the mick?

The one thing that always makes me form a quizzical look though and perhaps I only think like this because I’m a girl not boy, don’t they ever think…

“Imagine if someone said that to my sister or my mother? How would I feel then? Would those same lads still laugh, if it was their sisters bullied and humiliated?”

I’d like to think that the publicity that this received would deter a few, but I can’t imagine these lads were intelligent enough to read a newspaper so they will carry on. But if it happens to you, report them for intimidation to the floor manager of whatever bar or club they are in, if a threat is made ensure you don’t keep it to yourself. It is only by standing up to these lowly creatures and ensuring they are dealt with will they ever learn that their behaviour is not funny and not ok.

Well plus size as usual has been in the news a lot in the past fortnight.

From the ban on large sized fizzy drinks in NYC to Mississippi passing law to stop a similar fizzy drink ban unfolding there, it seems that governments globally are trying to step up and molly coddle people’s choice of food or drink. Having just arrived back from NYC myself I can confirm that just like in the myths, everything there is pretty much, big. From the size of the pavements to teaspoons, to the size of portions everything is definitely a super sized level up from what I’m used to here in the UK. But is all this new legislation a little too late? And is the answer to getting people healthy really in banning the size of a drinks take away cup.

Now we at SLiNK know it isn’t just about size (of both our bodies and cups) it’s about health and while like everything, moderation is key and obviously chugging litres of fizzy pop isn’t good for you, surely the fast food chains that pop up on every street corner are full of further hidden health risks than the drinks alone. Equally though, in a society of human rights and freedom of choice is it the governments place to tell us how much cola we’re allowed to consume?

While I believe in freedom of choice, I equally think that trying to coerce people or re-educate into a healthier lifestyle and better food choices is really important. But the tokenism of the drinks laws when fast food joints are so prevalent and so cheap makes me mad. It’s all very well to ban large quantities of sugary drink but if the licenses are still provided and chains like Coca Cola are still allowed to sponsor huge events (like the Olympics) we’re sending some very mixed messages, after all the Olympic Athletes noshed on burgers and chips at the Olympic Stadium as McDonalds was the main food sponsor as was chocolate brand cadbury. So really and truly if governments want to help, lets make fruit and veg and healthy food more accessible, better promoted and cheaper and make the fast food joints the ones that feel like a real treat not just the cheapest and quickest option.
